Phil Lynott. August 20th 1949 - January 4th 1986

Hard to believe that it's been 27 years since the rock world lost a true Legend.

Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy were quite simply my childhood heroes.

God bless you Phil. Rest in Peace.

  1. Great picture Steve, really captures the man, I can remember seeing him on stage, just like that... the huge grin and the pose. I first saw Lizzy as a support band, hard to believe now, about the time Fightin' was released, and nobody there that night had a shadow of doubt that they would be huge, Phil was unique. RIP.

    1. Hi Lee, Yeh that's Lynott's trademark stance ... I was absolutely fanatical about Lizzy and was lucky enough to see them several times. The first time was at Bingley Hall in Stafford on December 18th 1979 and it was amazing. I remember just standing there in awe as the first note of 'Jailbreak' rang out... and there through the smoke of the thunderflash's stood my heroes. ... it still gives me goose bumps just thinking about it. It was a fantstic night and they played, which were then new tracks from the 'Black Rose' album. They finished off the night with Phil dressed as Santa playing 'The Rocker'... Great memories ....
I still have a signed photo of the band framed in my home along with two poetry books which his Mother signed and kindly sent to me ... Cherished items that I will keep forever.

  3. That picture of Phil in his prime brought all the memories flooding back. I saw the band live at the Hammersmith Odeon, about 1977, two rows from the front, just about the time Snowy White joined. Fantastic night.

    1. The master at work my friend. He was simply a superb artist ans showman. If you like the Thin Lizzy sound then I'd highly recommend Scott Gorham's new band Black Star Riders. The band toured under the Thin Lizzy name for years (with Scott and Brian Downey being original Lizzy members) but they decided to release new material which is extremely Lizzy-like. The band members decided in Phil's honour not to perform new songs under the Thin Lizzy banner and hence changed their name.
Their new album is due out very soon and it sounds fantastic.

      All the best,
      Steve
