2012 A Damp Squib

Well it's almost the end of another year and hobby-wise it's been a definite damp sqib for me I'm afraid. My Napoleonic venture seemed to grind to a halt both through dis-satisfaction with rule sets and real life getting in the way. When I had the time to paint or play I simply didn't have the energy or motivation and as such this project is literally 'gathering dust' for now.

I simply haven't been satisfied with the games I've played and for the life of me I can't put my finger on exactly what aspect of the game is causing the problem. I think the main problem with me is that I can't seem to decide at what level I want to play and at the moment I just really can't be bothered to investigate it any further.

I thought a short break from the hobby would do the trick but this turned into a long break, probably around 4-5 months and counting and although I've purchased a couple of other rule sets which have sparked my interest a little I still can not get motivated to either pick up a paint brush or push some plastic around on my tabletop.

Anyhow, I've definitely given up on the hobby for the rest of this year at least. Let's see if I'm more inspired in 2013.

  2. Steve,

You completed a HUGE project by getting your attic converted and ready, so I think you had a very productive year. The two things you need to reignite your passion for the hobby are a set of rules that excite you, and an amiable opponent!

What are you looking for in terms of rules?

  3. Hi Peter,

I'm looking for a relatively simple rule system that allows me to play large scale actions without the need for thousands of figures! I'm currently looking at Volley & Bayonet but nothing has me racing back to the table yet.
As for an opponent then there's another problem as due to work and life etc I play totally solo and I think this may be a big part of the problem. Let's hope my wargaming mojo returns in '13.

    All the best

    Steve
